Named after Boer President Paul Kruger, Krugersdorp in western Gauteng was founded in 1887 after the discovery of gold in the area. Today Krugersdorp is the industrial hub of Western Gauteng and is an important mining city with gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime mined in the area. Krugersdorp is part of the Mogale City municipality, together with surrounding towns. In addition to its modern business centre, residential areas, schools, superb sports facillities and other city amenties, Krugersdorp has a well-stocked game reserve and a nearby bird sanctuary. Other nearby attractions include the Cradle of Humankind with the Sterkfontein Caves and the Wonder Cave. |
